As part of the 150th Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Swami Vivekananda, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai has released a movie on Swam Vivekananda in DVD on Jan 12, 2012, observed officially as the 'National Youth Day' across India (that day is birthday of Swami Vivekananda as per English Calendar).

'Vivekananda by Vivekananda': His life... in his own words.
"My ideal is to preach unto mankind their divinity".

vive_by_vive_film_poster.480x701

The Film is based on the autobiographical writings of Swami Vivekananda, the illustrious monk of India (19th century).

'Vivekananda by Vivekananda'' begins with the young Swami swimming across the turbulent Indian Ocean, climbing the rock in the middle of the Ocean to meditate. In solitude, he realizes life's mission‘upliftment’ of the masses of India. Thereupon, begins one of the most adventurous journeys in Indian history.

In 1893, to garner support for this mission, he decides to participate in the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago. His legendary speeches are among the many events of his life that the film tries to recreate in the first half. But success instead of giving him restful sleep makes him more motivated and determined to help his countrymen. On one such nights, troubled by the conditions of his fellow countrymen, Swamiji starts reminiscing about his childhood, his youth, poverty at home, his first meeting with his spiritual teacher and mystic Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa in Culcutta, his constant disagreements with his master, his master’s Maha samadhi, establishment of the Math (ashrama), his days as a wandering monk in India and finally journey to America …

Swami Vivekananda works tirelessly preaching in India on Vedanta, Indian culture and its priceless heritage and towards establishing the Ramakrishna Mission and empowering young men to carry forward the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna.

The Film is an attempt to recreate the life and times of one of the greatest visionaries in this world, through his own words.

175th Birth Anniversary Celebrations of Sri Ramakrishna

February 22–26, 2012

Our heroes must be spiritual. Such a hero has been given to us in the person of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. If this nation wants to rise, take my word for it, it will have to rally enthusiastically round this name. … So now you should place him before everyone. … Propagate his character, his teachings. —Swami Vivekananda

Everyone who helps even a little towards spreading the wonderful, life-giving message of Sri Ramakrishna is blessed—for he or she is bringing peace without as well as within. While India seeks to become a world power, it is our pride that a unique personality was born in India 175 years ago, and it is our bounden duty to rally around him in order to rise, become successful, live in harmony and attain supreme peace.

Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, is a spiritual centre of distinction, having been blessed by the visit of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, the divine consort of Sri Ramakrishna. Swami Ramakrishnananda, one of the eminent spiritual luminaries and a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, founded this Math. Several other distinguished direct disciples like Swamis Brahmananda, Premananda, Shivananda, Abhedananda and others have sanctified the Math by their visits. Furthermore, numerous renowned personalities from Chennai
in particular and Tamil Nadu in general have contributed to the eminence of the Math.

Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, takes pride in celebrating the 175th Birth Anniversary of Sri Ramakrishna (2011-12) through various programmes. One such programme is the ‘Satsanga in every home’ through which spirituality is sought to be ushered into the homes of the
devotees through Satsangas held weekly/fortnightly/monthly.

The celebrations will culminate with spiritual and cultural programmes from 22nd to 26th February 2012 at the Chennai Math (detailed 5-day program list will be published on website soon).

The ardent desire of the devotees of Chennai to have a grand temple dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna was fulfilled with the consecration of a Universal Temple at the Chennai Math in February 2000. The culmination of the 175th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Sri Ramakrishna in February 2012 also coincides with the completion of 12 years since the consecration of the Universal Temple at Chennai Math.

The Universal Temple dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna and its surroundings need renovation and the 175th Birth Anniversary celebration is a fitting occasion to carry this out and re-dedicate it to Sri Ramakrishna in all its splendour and
glory in February 2012. The renovation work is going on in the Math from mid of year 2011.

Sri Ramakrishna's 175th Birth Anniversary Special Program

SATSANG IN EVERY HOME

You may have been part of different groups like Farmers’ Association, Teachers’ Association etc. They are necessary for your professional or economic welfare.

But, an Association of Holy known as Satsang is essential for one to grow in devotion, blossom with divine virtues and express oneself into the large macrocosm.

In these days of consumer culture, people are subjected to delusions and depressions almost everyday. Homes devoid of peace and happiness may be attributed to individual, social or even financial causes. `Satsang in every home’ may be the panacea for these maladies. By practicing this, you can do miracles in your homes and society. Your home can be a pioneer for making the society healthy.

No doubt, in this 175th birth year of Sri Ramakrishna, His spiritual manifestation will be highly magnified. How to bring in this spirituality to your homes for the welfare of our home and Nation? Here are few suggestions:

Weekend Satsang can be conducted either weekly / fortnightly / once in a month in your home. Invite your neighbours and others who wish to take part in this holy association.

  1. Decorate the pictures of Holy Trio (Sri Ramakrishna at the Centre, Holy Mother to His left and Swamiji to His right) on a clean altar.
  2. Decorate with flowers and offer lamps and incense.
  3. Arrange discourses by the monks from Ramakrishna ashramas.
  4. Make a simple pure offering of fruits / sweets and distribute them to all gathered.
  5. The suggested programme may include the following:
    1. 15 minutes  -  Bhajan
10 minutes  -  Chanting of Bhagavad Gita or Vishnu Sahasranama or Lalita Sahasranama or similar religious texts.

  3. Devotees experience peace and find solace in reading the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna or Gospel of Holy Mother at times of crisis. Hence, the reading must be regular and the sayings must be deliberated upon.
  4. During the Satsang, let everyone share his/her actions that were beneficial to fellow human beings.
  5. The Satsang may be organised at the same place or at different venues.
