Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai

Viveka Murasu

Spread ideas – go from village to village, from door to door – then only there will be real work ….. Swami Vivekananda

Swamiji’s words have an ageless relevance. Time has neither weakened nor obscured the powerful echo of his words. Time has, in fact, added vigor and momentum to the need to `spread ideas’.

In tune with Swamiji’s clarion call, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, launched a mass contact program on 15th July, 2004.  The aim of the program: to broadcast the life-giving message of Swami Vivekananda to the masses, especially in remote villages.

Christened as Viveka Murasu (Murasu in Tamil means kettle-drum), the program has been quite effective and successful. Aimed at the people in villages, especially the youth, Viveka Murasu consists of a mini-bus customized to meet the needs, which is taken around remote villages spreading the message of Swamiji.   Murasu is led by a monk from the Chennai Math and a team staff, and tours various parts of Tamil Nadu in a planned and phased manner.

Viveka Murasu aims at:

1. Creating self-confidence and social harmony and also awakening among the rural youth for self-development through programs oriented towards Personality Development.

2. Creating self-employment opportunities for the villagers through vocational training programs, designed to improve the quality of their life.

3. Spreading the life-giving and character-building messages of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda (Holy Trio) through film screenings, dissemination of literature and exhibitions.

So far Viveka Murasu has visited 1641 villages, covered 1123 educational institutions and has carried the message of the Holy Trio to 6,20,162 students

The visit of Viveka Murasu to different Villages also acts as a unifying factor, bringing together small organizations dedicated to the Holy Trio and celebrating various important occasions together.

In many villages, students were shy and diffident prior to the visit of the Viveka Murasu. After attending the Personality Development class and watching the video show, many of these students were so inspired that they got the courage to come on stage and deliver a speech on the gains from the visit of the Viveka Murasu to their village. Even the Headmasters / Headmistresses of the Schools were surprised at this development!

Similarly, in Colleges many students, especially girls, voiced the opinion that they have now got the courage and the confidence to face challenges and overcome all hardships in their lives as a result of the Personality Development program.
