Introduction:

Sri Ramakrishna Math National School Chennai – 79 is owned and run by Ramakrishna Math and Mission Belur, Howrah Dist. West Bengal, through its Chennai Math at Mylapore. The School is one of the first to be established by Sri Ramakrishna Math and Mission exclusively for the education of girls. Swami Ramakrishnananda, one of the direct disciples of Sri Ramakrishna was sent to Chennai to establish a branch center in the year 1897. The Maharaj fondly called as Sasi Maharaj by the devotees, after establishing a branch Math at Chennai, concentrated on the uplift of the poor, particularly women. The National School is even today situated in the midst of economically, socially and educationally poor people. The situation was worst in the year 1906, when the school was established by revered Shashi Maharaj. Initially the school was started at No: 6, Krishnappa Naicken Agraharam in a rented building and then was moved to many places and finally a building for this school was constructed in the year 1980 at the present location (#79, Basin Bridge Road, Mint, Chennai).

Organizational Setup:

The School is governed by a School committee and the Adhyaksha (President) of Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai, who is also the president of the school committee. The School has got honorary secretary and members from teaching staff and devotees of the Math. The present president of the committee is Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj. The present secretary is Swami Srividyananda, Sri Ramakrishna Math, Chennai. The committee meets at least once in 3 months and guides the effective functioning of the School.

Activities of the School:

The School offers Co-education from Std I to V both in Tamil and Telugu medium. The school was recognized and Govt. grant for teachers salary was given from the year 1917. Now there are 17 Tamil medium and 3 Telugu medium teachers.  The grant doesn’t include money for other expenses such as salary for scavengers, watchwomen, sweeper, expenses towards electricity charges, metro water charges, repairs and maintenance of the building. The expenditure towards these recurring running expenses is roughly around Rs. 10 Lakhs per year. The building constructed in the year 1980 was not repaired and renovated for want of funds. The toilet block, student’s noon meal center, dining hall, electrical and water supply works, painting and white washing needs to be done.

We request the devotees/well wishers to support the school, which is more than 100 years old (centenary was celebrated in the year 2006) and provides quality education to the poor girls and boys. The strength of students in the academic year 2009-10 is 520. The education is free to all irrespective of religion, caste and creed. No Fees is collected from any student. It is a master piece of service rendered by Ramakrishna Math during the past 100 years.

To meet the recurring running expenses and periodical repairs and renovation of the building liberal contribution from devotees of the Math and general public will be of immense help to Math for the service of poor, which is described by Bhagawan Sri Ramakrishna as ‘Service of God’. All contibutions are exempted from Income Tax under Section 80G of I.T. Act.
